Known by locals as ‘Pedro Castle’, this historic Great House stands as the oldest surviving stone structure in the Cayman Islands, rich in cultural and historical significance.

Built in 1780 by Englishman William Eden with enslaved labor, it has played many roles over the centuries, including a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, and Government Assembly. It’s famously where Cayman’s first elected parliament convened in 1831 and where the abolition of slavery was declared in 1835.

Despite enduring hurricanes, fires, and legends of hauntings, the beautifully restored Pedro Castle remains a proud symbol of Cayman’s heritage.

What to Expect

Thus far, a highlight of our past 3 days on Grand Cayman. The restored building and its history are wonderful. Our tour guide, Trisha, was stellar. She's a virtual fountain of knowledge and exuberance! We highly recommend visiting this place and its restaurant is by all accounts, reportedly fantastic. The gift shop has a very nice variety of reasonably priced items.

We went to the Pedro St. James historical site based on the recommendation of a local. What a terrific recommendation! If you want to get a unique perspective of Cayman history and culture look no further than the guided tour. Stacy our tour guide is a legitimate Cayman national treasure with an incredible amount of local knowledge and history, including family history having a mother who was born and lived in the Pedro St. James building. We were fortunate to be alone on the tour in the off season, Stacy spent a considerable amount of time with us sharing his knowledge and history - we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent and highly recommend it!
