The Sea is History at the National Museum
Cayman Islands National Museum
Opening Date: Thursday, 16 October 2025, 6pm - 8pm
Venue: Cayman Islands National Museum (Waterfront)
The Cayman Islands National Museum proudly presents its newest exhibition, The Sea is History, an evocative exploration of the deep and enduring relationship between the Cayman Islands and the sea.
Taking inspiration from Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott’s celebrated poem, the exhibition reflects on how the sea has shaped Caymanian culture, heritage, and way of life across generations. Visitors will encounter a compelling collection of artifacts — some mysterious, others richly documented — recovered from beneath the waves and along Cayman’s shores.
These objects, paired with striking images and personal narratives, illuminate the sea’s role as both a witness to history and a vessel of memory.
From shipwreck relics to contemporary works, The Sea is History invites audiences to reflect on the ocean as a living archive — one that continues to influence Cayman’s identity, traditions, and sense of belonging.
This exhibition is more than a display of objects; it is a journey through time, memory, and meaning, honoring the sea’s enduring presence in the lives of Caymanians.
