Emancipation Day Public Holiday & Celebrations

Emancipation Day Activities invites the community to reflect on a defining moment in Cayman’s history, the end of slavery in 1835, while celebrating the resilience, strength, and legacy of those who came before. Emancipation Day is observed as a national public holiday in the Cayman Islands, commemorating the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and honouring the unique chapter in Cayman’s history when all formerly enslaved people were granted full freedom without a period of apprenticeship.

As part of Heritage Month, this observance encourages a deeper understanding of Caymanian identity and shared history through culture, community, and tradition. This event features performances by the Cayman Islands Folk Singers, local bands, schools, dance studios, and a special performance by Swanky, followed by a fireworks display to close the evening. Admission is free.
