Explore-Cayman iPhone app launch

GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS 10th JULY 2014: Acorn Publishing announced today the general availability of the free Explore-Cayman iPhone app.

The Explore-Cayman iPhone app is the only app for the Cayman Islands that includes a comprehensive events calendar that is updated daily and recommends the very best things to do in Cayman. The app includes information and booking capabilities for free activities, recommended tours and attractions, watersports, diving, shopping, restaurants with full menus, spas, car rentals, photographers, planning a wedding and much more.

It was fitting that the Deputy Premier of the Cayman Islands, Hon. Moses Kirkconnell, who is also the Minister for Tourism, was one of the first people to see the new Explore-Cayman app and commented “it’s like having a personal concierge in your pocket”.

The Hon. Moses Kirkconnell continued commenting, “The Explore-Cayman app is well-designed, easy to use and brings the best of all there is to see and do in the Cayman Islands right to your fingertips. The technically advanced app features a full range of activities and events to virtually explore and is a great tool for making bookings”.

Tom Mason, General Manager of Comfort Suites added his support saying, “Explore-Cayman is one of the best travel apps I’ve ever seen and we are lucky to have it in the Cayman Islands. Not only is the app a great tool for residents, but it showcases all the great things to do in Cayman for visitors in an easy and convenient fashion. Our guest service agents will recommend this app to provide an even higher level of service to our guests with the ultimate aim of encouraging repeat bookings.”

Advanced capabilities of the app include finding the closest restaurant or activity to the user’s current location, sorting activities by price, displaying which tour operators provide a free pick-up service, getting real-time directions with estimated travel time, getting real-time flight information to and from the Cayman Islands, a currency converter that supports 16 different currencies, real-time weather forecasts and almost 100 articles covering topics such as the Sister Islands, wreck diving, the local music scene, rainy day options and much more.

Charles Grover, a Publishing Director at Acorn Publishing said, “The Explore-Cayman iPhone app has taken exactly a year to develop. It’s a distillation of everything we have learnt from our customers using the Explore Cayman magazine, website and iPad app. The biggest challenge was trying to present the depth of information and richness of capabilities that we have, in the simplest fashion.

The whole concept was to ensure users access the information they are looking for with the least number of taps as possible. The app has been designed to integrate directly into a tour operator’s or car rental’s booking engine and it is smart enough to intelligently prompt for different information that might be required when booking a table at a restaurant verses hiring a car.”

Charles Grover continued, “importantly for Cayman’s stay-over visitors, the app has been designed to function offline with no need to be connected to a network, meaning there are no expensive roaming charges. We have also partnered with over 50 companies in the Cayman Islands to bring people discounts of up to 30% off tour prices and have included other ways to save money including exclusive shopping discounts and restaurant offers.”

The app was developed by Netclues Inc. which is based in the Cayman Islands. Jay Mehta, the Business Development manager at Netclues said, “This app is the most sophisticated and technically challenging app we have ever produced. It uses the native functions of the iPhone making the display and navigation extremely attractive and it automatically synchronises data to ensure that users are viewing the most up to date information.”

When asked about future developments Mr Grover said, “We are constantly looking at new ways to maintain our lead as ‘The really useful guide company’ and have a release schedule that will achieve this. We are already planning improvements and new capabilities for future releases."
