What is Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is defined as “Life Emitting Light.” This means that bioluminescence is light produced by a chemical reaction within a living organism.
Many species use bioluminescence to communicate; some use it to lure their next meal and others to ward off predators. On land we see bioluminescence in fireflies, glowworms and glowing fungi. In the deep sea, 80-90% of species use bioluminescence. Surprisingly, only a handful of locations around the world have been discovered to have such high concentrations of bioluminescence in shallow water.
Grand Cayman is one of these unique places and has a bioluminescent bay for guests to explore. Tiny microorganisms called ‘Pyrodinium Bahamanse’ are responsible for this captivating light display. When agitated the water comes to life in electric hues of green and blue. Go and find out why these unique bays exist and experience it first hand with Cayman Kayaks.
Guests say bioluminescence is like:
“Holding a galaxy”
“Vvvvvvuuwwwwooommmm - my paddle is a lightsaber!”
The bioluminescence is only visible on the darkest nights of the month. Contact Cayman Kayaks for dates and times.
